Citi ThankYou Gift Card Promotion: Is 10% Fewer Points Worth It?

By the Gift Card Zoo Editorial Team

See which gift cards qualify through September 29, 2026, how the points savings work, and why buying Landry’s with cash is cheaper.

Citi’s September 2026 gift card promotion reduces the points required for select brands by 10% through September 29, 2026.

For Landry’s, buying with cash is the better deal: a $100 card costs about $68 right now on Gift Card Zoo versus an effective $90 through Citi, assuming a normal 10,000-point redemption and a 1-cent alternative value per point. Buying saves about $22 in economic cost and preserves your points.

Which gift cards qualify?

The promotion covers the following dining, retail and travel gift cards—not every brand in Citi’s catalog.

GroupParticipating gift cards
DiningBurger King, Domino’s, Landry’s, Outback Steakhouse
Gap brandsAthleta, Banana Republic, Gap, Gap Options, Old Navy

The deadline is September 29, 2026. Brands from previous promotions, such as Apple, Best Buy and Uber, are not part of this offer’s participating-brand list.

How much value does the points reduction add?

A 10% reduction in points required increases gift card value per point by approximately 11.1%: the card’s value stays the same while its points cost falls.

The example below assumes a $100 gift card normally requires 10,000 points. It illustrates the promotion’s math rather than establishing a denomination or base redemption rate for every participating card.

ExampleNormalPromotion
Gift card value$100$100
Points required10,0009,000
Gift card value per point1 centAbout 1.11 cents
Effective cost at a 1-cent alternative point value$100$90

You save 1,000 points in this example. The effective $90 cost is the assumed value of the points surrendered, not a cash payment to Citi.

Compare the approximately 1.11-cent redemption value with your available cash-back and travel redemptions. An alternative worth more than 1.11 cents per point would beat this gift card redemption even before considering discounted cash purchases.

Does Citi beat the cash price for Landry’s?

No. Citi’s 10% reduction in Landry’s redemption points produces an effective $90 cost under the assumptions above, while Gift Card Zoo currently tracks 32% off through GCX—about $68 for a $100 Landry’s card.

Those percentages are not directly comparable: Citi reduces the points required, while the marketplace discount reduces the cash purchase price. Converting both to dollars makes the decision clear.

Buy Landry’s with cash at about $68 rather than surrendering points worth $90: the cash purchase costs about $22 less for the same $100 face value.

At 9,000 points, Citi would match the $68 cash purchase only if you valued those points at approximately 0.76 cents each. Above that point valuation, cash wins. Live marketplace prices can change.

Should you redeem Citi points before September 29?

For Landry’s, choose the approximately $68 cash purchase over the effective $90 points redemption under the 1-cent-per-point assumption. For the other participating brands, compare their actual promotional points cost with your cash-back or travel value and the current cash price of the same gift card before the promotion ends September 29, 2026.
